I’m currently co-directing and producing a documentary film about Salsa with my dear friend Janja Glogovac. Part of the reason why I’m writing this blog is because I want to share with you a unique behind the scenes perspective on the production process. I’m inviting you to join us along the way as we travel the world filming some of the world’s finest dancers and musicians. Follow us as we venture around the world photographing exotic locations, shoot world renowned Salsa festivals and conducting interviews of touching personal stories of how Salsa changes lives.
This documentary is not just about music and dance it’s about people. It’s about getting into the HEART OF SALSA.
Allow me to backtrack…4 years ago I stopped by Puerto Rico on my way back from Guadeloupe. I was staying near a place there they call La Placita. It’s a market during the day but on Thursday nights it seems to spring to life with Salsa! I was intrigued by it all so of course when someone invited me to dance I couldn’t resist. The first thing I noticed was the natural and organic way everyone danced together and how easily and freely they communicated.
There didn’t seem to be any prejudice between social classes, colors, sizes nor ages, it was liberating and beautiful. Prior to that night I was familiar with Salsa music but that was the first time I had ever danced salsa. I come from a background in ballet which is a stunning and articulate art form but individually choreographed even in duo. In the street in San Juan a dialogue was going on between partners as they seemed to radiate an inner joy and they expressed this joy in unison with the energy of the music. I got a taste of the freedom and sense of unity that Salsa dancing made me feel. That was the night I fell in love with Salsa…
A few months later at home in Los Angeles while Janja was visiting she suggested that we go out dancing possibly at some trendy club in Hollywood. However in the past I never enjoyed my time in nightclubs, they just feel like meat markets where most of the patrons intention is not to dance but to get drunk and hook up. That’s just not my scene so I suggested that we should go to a Latin club but take a class first so we can at least follow the basics. I found a class at Josie Neglia’s School and from that day night Janja and I both developed a passion for Salsa that would change our lives.
